Overview
Rishikesh, is situated on the right bank of the Ganges River and is a pilgrimage town for Hindus, with ancient sages and saints meditating here in search of higher knowledge. The Ganges originates at Rishikesh and flows 249 km through constrained Himalayan valleys before debouching onto the Gangetic Plain at the pilgrimage centre of Haridwar. Along the river's banks, there are a lot of temples and ashrams. This city has hosted the yearly "International Yoga Festival" beginning in the first week of March 1999. It is also known as the "Gateway to the Garhwal Himalayas" and the "Yoga Capital of the World." A vegetarian-only and alcohol-free city, Rishikesh.
While Uttarkashi, a well-known yoga location, is 170 kilometres (110 miles) uphill on the way to Gangotri, the Tehri Dam is only 53 miles (86 km) away. The four Chota Char Dham pilgrimage sites—Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri—are accessible from Rishikesh. It serves as the starting point for treks to popular Himalayan tourist locations like Harsil, Chopta, and Auli as well as to Dodital, Dayara Bugyal, Kedarkantha, and Har Ki Dun for camping and panoramic Himalayan views in the summer and winter.
